From January to May, Japan's textile and apparel imports fell by 3.0%

From January to May this year, Japan imported 16.4 billion U.S. dollars worth of textiles and clothing from the world, which was a year-on-year decrease of 3.0%, and a month-on-month decrease of 0.37 percentage points.

In the top ten sources of textiles and apparel imports from Japan, China imported 11.16 billion U.S. dollars, a decrease of 5.16%, which was greater than the overall decline in Japanese imports. Market share dropped by 1.5 percentage points to 71%. In addition, South Korea and Taiwan provinces have both experienced a decline of more than 10%, while Vietnam, Indonesia and Bangladesh all have about a 10% increase.

Japan imported 3.49 billion US dollars of textiles from the world, a decrease of 6.7%. Among them, 1.98 billion U.S. dollars were imported from China, a decrease of 8.0%, and the market share decreased by 0.8 percentage point to 56.9%. The top 10 importers in Malaysia, Taiwan Province and Indonesia fell between 10% and 20%. Vietnam, Thailand and Italy achieved growth of more than 10%.

Japan imported 12.91 billion U.S. dollars of clothing, a slight drop of 2.0%. China imported 9.65 billion U.S. dollars, a decrease of 4.5%, and its market share dropped 2 percentage points year-on-year to 74.7%. Imports from Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam in Southeast Asia have risen against the trend. Indonesia has increased by 28.9%. Bangladesh and Vietnam have risen by about 10%. It can be seen that the establishment of Japan and ASEAN Free Trade Area has improved the competitive advantage of these countries' products.
