Application of Nanomaterials in Polyurethane Coatings and Adhesives

1 Polyurethane coating

Polyurethane coatings have excellent properties such as corrosion resistance, elasticity, wear resistance, and insulation properties. They are used in a wide range of applications. However, its suspension stability, thixotropy, and weatherability are low. The introduction of nanoparticles in polyurethane coatings can significantly improve the above defects, and at the same time improve the hardness, toughness, compactness, transparency, scratch resistance, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and water resistance of the coatings.

2 Polyurethane adhesive

The polyurethane adhesive has high initial adhesiveness, soft adhesive layer, excellent peel strength, bending strength, torsional and impact resistance, and good resistance to cold water, oil, dilute acid, and abrasion resistance. It can not only be at room temperature. Under curing, but also heat curing, but poor heat resistance. The addition of nanoparticles to the adhesive can significantly increase its heat resistance, tensile strength, shear strength, peel strength, and the like.

Shanghai Xinfeng Chemical Co., Ltd. studied the polyurethane prepolymers with NCO groups at both ends as the A component and the curing agent E-300 as the B component. A EPDM rubber-based 2-component waterproofing agent adhesive was prepared. Its excellent physical and chemical properties, stable aging properties, tensile strength, shear strength and peel strength and elongation at break of the sample have been improved, but also can control the adhesive rheological and thixotropic properties.

The Department of Chemical Engineering of Tsinghua University studied the effect of CaCO3 on the mechanical properties and rheological properties of silicone-modified polyurethane sealants. The results show that the elasticity and thixotropy of the sealant made from nano-CaCO3 is better than that of heavy CaCO3. Due to its high strength, low coefficient of friction, and polycrystalline properties, nanodiamond powders have excellent wear resistance. Beijing Tiangong Surface Material Technology Co., Ltd. prepared a nano-diamond/polyurethane adhesive. Its wear resistance was 2.24 times higher than that of pure polyurethane adhesive, and the tensile strength also increased by 27.8%.
